GERMAN ROMANCE.

PRINCE AND COMMONER. A romantic match between a young prince of ancient lineage and the daughter of a humble official has had the curious effect of plunging Stolberg, in the Harz Mountains, in deep mourning (says the London "Daily Telegraph"). The little town, which is one of the most picturesque spots in Germany, was fully convinced that the owner of its castle would one day be Prince Consort of_ the Netherlands. Though he 'no longer has sovereign rights, Prince "Wolff-Heinrich of Stolberg-Stolberg, who is 29 years of age, belongs to one of the oldest ruling families in Europe. Many months ago reports, which seemed to come from a well-informed source, said that negotiations had been opened for a marriage between the prince and the heiress to the Dutch throne. Rumours became almost certainty when Queen Wilhelmina spent part of the summer at Schierke, and twice drove over with a large suite to pay visits to the prince at Stolberg. The Stolbergs already saw their town the summer residence of a Dutch Queen, and the holiday resort of the most affluent of her subjects. Great was both their astonishment and disappointment when the published banns announced that the prince would lead to the altar, not,Princess Juliana, but Eraulein Irma Erfert, the daughter of a lower middle-class official. It appears that the young lady came to Stolberg about four years ago in the modest capacity of mother's help to the wife of the burgomaster. She was for some time clandestinely betrothed to the prince.
