FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the "Guardian," April 5, 1883.) Horticultural Society.—A: meeting of members of the Ashburton Horticultural Society took place at the Arcade Chambers last evening. There AA-as only a small attendance, and Mr Alfred Harrison occupied tne chair. No committee business was considered. Mr S. E. Poyntz read an ably-written paper on "Profitable Gardening." The Rink.—Several gentlemen anxious to resuscitate the Ashburton Rink Club's regular Avinter meetings contemplate taking steps in that direction. Smart Telegraphy.—A local firm, Messrs Friedlander Bros., dispatched a cablegram from the colony to London on Saturday last at 11 a.m., and received a reply at Ashburton on Monday morning at 9 a.m. Fire Brigade Vacancies.—Consequent on several members of the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade having left the district, Ave have been requested to mention that there is room for upwards of six Avilling men in the ranks of the brigade, and those Avho are likely to be permanent residents in the town will have little difficulty in being appointed to the A*acant positions. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the "Guardian," April 5,1905.) Disease Among Fowls.—Poultrybreeders in Ashburton are troubled just now owing to the outbreak of a disease among their fowls. Thirty fowls died in a week in one yard, and other fanciers have suffered similar losses. Unless matters'change the aid of the Government expert should be enlisted. The Hockey USeason. —The hockey season was opened in the Domain yesterday, when a match was played between the St. AndreAv's Presbyterian Young Men's Club and the Ashburton Hockey Club. After a well-contested game, the match resulted in a draw, each team scoring three goals". Druids' Lodge.—The fortnightly meeting of the .Success of Ashburton Ladies' Druids' Lodge was held on Wednesday evening, when Sister E. Gobbe, A.D., presided over a good attendance of members. One neAV member Avas duly initiated into the Order. After the business was trans--acted, Sister Gobbe presented Sister S. Smith with a gold brooch and charm on behalf of the Lodge, as she is leaving the district for Christchurch. , Sale of Wheat.—A farmer on the outskirts of the Tinwald reports having .just sold a line of 1212 bushels of Tuscan wheat, on trucks at Winslow, at 4s 5d per bushel.
