CHARGE OF FRAUD.
THREE MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT (Special to the "Guardian.") CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Three months' imprisonment with hard labour was the sentence imposed in the Magistrate's Court yesterday on Norman Bruce Stewart, a labourer, aged 36 years, of Hinds, on a charge of defrauding the Texas Oil Company and a further charge of attempting to defraud the same company. The charges were: —Obtaining' four cases of petrol worth £3 13s 4d by representing that they were ordered by Archie Stewart, of Rakaia, and the following day attempting to obtain five cases of kerosene and a case of motor spirit valued at £l6 13s Bd. The accused, who was represented by Mr Russell, pleaded guilty. "His trouble is drink," said Detective Sergeant O'Brien. "He is not a bad-hearted man." Mr Russell said that Stewart was prepared to take out a prohibition "Ho had one before," said Mr L. D. Mosley, S.M., "and he broke it. He has also been to the island for inebriates. He has hau every possible chance. He needs to get the liquor out of his system." Mr Russell said that some years ago Stewart had been injured about the head in a motor accident, and that might have contributed in some fashion" to his present predicament.
