A SNAP DIVISION.

COALITION MAJORITY OF THREE APPOINTMENTS CRITICISED. (Special to the "Guardian.") WELLINGTON, December 9. Only three votes separated the Government from defeat when a snap division \yas taken in the House in the early hours of this morning during the introductory stages of the Appropriation Bill. The point at issue was whether a superannuated civil servant should have his income augmented by being engaged for other Government work, with particular reference to the temporary engagement of Mr Walter Newton (ex-Secretary for Labour) as Conciliation" Commissioner. Tlie clause in the Bill validated, the payment for those extra services. The division, taken on the formal question that provision be made in accordance with his Excellency's Message transmitting the Bill, resulted in a Government victory by 32 votes to 29, five of its supporters voting with the Opposition.

On a division on the clause it Avas retained by 32 votes to 29. Messrs H. Atmore (Ind.), A. Harris, H. Holland, H. S. S. Kyle, and R, A. Wright (Coalition) voted with the Opposition.
