CANTERBURY v. HAWKE'S BAY. HAMILTON'S USEFUL SCORE. CHRISTCHURCH, December 9. The Hawke's Bay touring team commenced a "two days' match with a Canterbury eleven to-day. The weather was windy and cold, and a light shower of rain in mid-afternoon interrupted play for a few minutes. The turf was in good order, but heavy rain this evening has probably soaked the wicket. A feature of the visitors' batting was the partnership of Browne and O'Brien, of whom the former gave a really impressive display. Canterbury opened their innings on resuming after luncheon with Hamilton and Dunster. Chadwick bowled from the south end, and 10 came off his first over. Browne was the other bowler, and Dunster snicked him for a lucky four. Play was slow for a time, but with 30 on the board Duuster cut one to Browne in the slips! He made two attempts to hold the catch, the second ono knocking it on to O'Brien, who held it. 33—1—17. Powell followed, but Browne beat him all the way with a good ball. 34 —2 —o. Cromb followed, and Hamilton hit a full toss off Chadwick to Beuth at mid on. It was an easy catch but was dropped. Beuth replaced Chadwick, Reaney going on at the north end. Fifty went up for 50 minutes' play, and the rain now increased, necessitating the use of sawdust. In Beuth's next over Oromb was caught at forward point off a mishit, and heavy rain caused an adjournment. 55—3—9. On resuming some 20 minutes later Morris partnered Hamilton. Beuth and Reaney still had charge of the bowling, and off the latter Hamilton got four for a fine offdrive. After some dull batting Hamilton fell to a magnificent catch at second slip by Finlayson. 71—4—31.
