SILVER MONSTRANCE
GIFT TO CATHOLIC CHURCH. DESIGNED IN AUCKLAND. (Special to the "Guardian.") AUCKLAND, Dec. 6. A most originally designed solid silver monstrance —a transparent pyx, in which the consecrated host is exposed to view—has been donated by a local priest to St. John's Roman Catholic Church, Parnell. The monstrance,' which was specially designed for the donor by Mr J. S. Clapham, an employee of a local manufacturing firm of jewellers, contains 150 oz. of silver, and in design represents the entrance to a tabernacle. On either side of the portal stand two large cylindrical Flemish turreted pillars, and the whole is mounted on a solid silver pedestal, which in itself has distinctly beautiful curves. The cylindrical pyx. containing the lunet, and covered bv a glass window, is of gilt. On the immediate front of the room an elaborately-designed cross is situated. If this sacred ornament of such singular beauty Avere imported and sold in thiseountry, the price would be in the vicinity 1 of £125, perhaps a little more.
