CRICKET.
THE FIRST TEST MATCH.
COMMENT IN LONDON PRESS LONDON, December 7. "The Times" cricket writer says: "It would be unwise to encourage extravagant hopes, for tho Australians' form in the first Test must be false or else the batsmen, are waning. The absence of Bradman enormously affected the team's power. Throughout the batsmen apparently were worried and not intimidated by the fast bowling on the leg stump, which was perfectly reasonable and implies no unfairness." J. B. Hobbs, writing in the "Star," congratulated Jardino on his captaincy and gives Larwoodi the major honours for the victory. He expresses the opinion that Australia will maUe soveial changes in the team for the next Test, but says that if the selectors arc wise they will not repeat the occasional mistakes of the. English selectors of trying too many players. O'Reilly made his leg break lift disconcertingly and bowled so weil, Hobbs confessed, that the writer would haye trembled for England's chances if the team had to make 150 in their last knock. He was unable to detect any weakness in McOabe, who was really a great cricketer. If Bradman were also playing at his top form, the story of the Tests would be very different.
