HORSE BREAKS A LEG.
FOREST STAG DESTROYED. WOODVILLE, * December 8. Forest Stag, a five-year-old gelding by Royal Stag, was found in a paddock at Woodville this morning with a broken leg, and he had to be destroyed. He was owned by the Ot'aki trainer, W. Stone, who a few months ago had the misfortune to lose a promising mare, Alpinist, through a similar accident. Forest Stag, who was an acceptor for two races to-day, was just coming back to form.
BREAKING THE "BOOKS."
A PLUNGING BACKER. There was a lucky and also plucky punter operating at Flemington (Victoria) on Oaks day, the third, day cf the spring meeting of the Victorian Racing Club (states an Australian writer). Starting with ajjank of £6 he took £2OO to the amount about Panoramic, in the Maiden and landed. The following race he took the odds to the £2OO about 'Lisburn at 4to 1, and in the Oaks planted his winnings, £IOOO, on, Protea at !*• to 1. She won, and he had run his £6 into £2500. It had long been his ambition (and he is not alone in the desire) to break the books. However, he has got the hardest part to do; many a punter has found that out to his sorrow, and many more will.
LIMOND AS A SIRE.
AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. WINNERS
The success of Limond's progeny in New Zealand and Australia has prompted comment in London, "Sporting Life" recently said:— Limond has had offspring racing in Australia since 1927, and up to date they have won 88 races and stakes value £91,620, which gives the astounding average of over £IOOO a race. Limond, in New Zealand, • has, of course, also headed the sires' list. The winnings of his stock in the Dominion over eleven seasons total £238,524. This makes an annual average of over £21,000. There caiii be no question of his extraordinary success, for such figures would be remarkable in any country, since in New Zealand racing stakes evidently cannot be on anything like so generous a scale as in England, France, and the United States. Yet when the son of Desmond was retired from training it was impossible to obtain a higher bid than £IOO for that grand-looking and marvellously well-bred horse. When be was put to the stud at Newmarket lie languished at a fee of 18 guineas. After the two-year-old victories of Limosin called attention to his sire, Limond was then sold to Mr George Currie (the owner of Absurd) and exported to New Zealand. The rest of the story is turf history. Limond is by Desmond, out of Lindal, by Kendal out of Sunrise, by Springfield. This is the famous No. 1 "Sunshine family." Limond -was closely related to Sandal, by William the Third. He went to Argentina, and there "got" Macon, considered by many people to be one of the best horses ever raced in South America.
