BANKER RETIRING

MR JOHN MACGIBBON. BANK OF NEW ZEALAND CAREER (Special to the "Guardian ") CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The pending retirement of Mr John Mac Gibbon, Christchurch manager of the Bank of New Zealand, after 13 years' service, is announced. For 17 years at various stages of his career Mr Mac Gibbon has been stationed in Christchurch. He wil retire on August 31, and will be succeeded by Mr P. L. Porter, at present assistant manager of the Bank in Christchurch. Mr Mac Gibbon's father, Mr Thomas Mac Gibbon, was one of the earliest pioneers of Otago and Southland. He arrived at Port Chalmers in 1849, and was later prominent in local body work and as a member of the Legislative Council. Mc Mac Gibbon himself was born in 1870 on his father's farm at Hokonui, Southland, and was educated in that province. He entered the service of the Bank of New Zealand in his 20th year as a junior clerk at Temuka. In 1890 he was transferred to the Geraldine branch. At the end of tl;e same year Mr Mac Gibbon received his first appointment in Christchurch,, joining the staff under Mr James Embling. In 1896, after his marriage, he was transferred to Invereargill, and remained there until 1915, when he rejoined the Christchurch branch as accountant. In 1918 he did inspection work in the South Island, and the following year he was appointed manager at Ashburton. His stay there, however, was short, and he travelled through both Islands as a sub-inspector before being appointed resident sub-inspector at Wellington, During Mr G. A. U. Tapper's absence in England in 1923, Mr Mac Gibbon took over the managership at Christchurch. On his return to head office he was appointed inspector in charge of staff and premises, and held that appointment until January 3, 1926, when he became manager of the Christchurch branch of the Bank. Mr Porter's Career. Mr Porter, who is to succeed Mr MacGibbon, was born at Wajroa, Hawke s Bay, and joined the Bank m 1904 at Quecnstown. From 1910 until 19191 he. was on the head office staff, and alter receiving an appointment as assistant accountant in Wellington, was transferred to a similar position m Curistchurch in 1921. He was subsequently appointed Ashburton manager ill 1922, Invereargill manager in 1924, and went to Suva in 1926 as the Bank's manager in Fiji. During 1928 and 1929 he was attached to the London office as assistant to the manager, and in the two following years—until his return to Christchurch—did inspection work m Australia and New Zealand. Mr Porter is himself related to one of the oldest Canterbury families, for his grandfather, Mr David Porter, arrived at Lyttelton in the Cressy in 1850, and with his two brothers took up land near what is now known as Porter's Pass. The position made vacant by Mr Porter's advance will be filled by Mr H. E. Garth, at present accountant to the Bank at Christchurch.
