SLAPPED ON FACE.
INDIAN IN A CHURCH. (Special to the "Guardian") SUVA, June 3. A somewhat amusing case came before the Police Court recently when Pundit Durga Prasad, who is known in Auckland and Sydney, prosecuted a highly-respected Indian lady for slapping him twice on the face at a church welcome to \ a returned missionary. Durga refused to take the oath in the usual way, on the Bible. He also objected to take it on the Ramayan, stating that he was a Christian, but said he was willing to take the "Scotch oath." The Magistrate said as he was a Christian he must swear on the Bible, so this he did after some delay He said he had asked the woman's husband why his wife wanted to give him a hiding, and the husband said it was because he had made certain allegations against her. The husband advised Durga to leave Suva as other women were also going' to give him a hiding. Durga. denied saying anything about the woman, and after lengthy evidence the woman was lined one shilling, without costs.
