THE UNEMPLOYED.

THE ASHBURTON COMMITTEE. DECISIONS OF THE EXECUTIVE. The Executive of the Ashburton Local Unemployment Committee met last evening, when there were present: Messrs R. Kerr (chairman), G. Kelly, J. P. Hanratty, C. H. N. Clarkson, T. Gibson and W. Patterson. The Postmaster (Mr C. H. N. Clarkson) reported that the total registrations pending at the beginning of the month were 301. There had been 47 new registrations up to Wednesday. Five men had been placed under the No. 4a Scheme and 10 had been removed from the register. There were 130 men eligible for work for the week ending May 23. . . The Unemployment Commissioner (Mr Malcolm Fraser) wrote that the Board had not fixed any definite maximum amount which any applicant may possess in money or property before being disqualified for relief. Each case should b? dealt with on its merits. In the case of a young man with no dependents it would be no great hardship if he had to draw on savings for his present support, but in the case of an elderly man or one with family responsibility, it would be a decided hardship if he was required to exhaust all his capital before obtaining relief. , Discussing cases in which it might be inferred that farmers had put off men to re-engage them under the unemployment schemes, Mr G. Kelly said that in seme instances farmers were compelled to dispense with the services of employees because t’.ie firms would not pay out money for wages. In genuine cases such as those, farmers should not be debarred from re-engag-ing men. After all, it was the best idea to get all the available men back on tin? land. Mr Kelly stated that if the County Council was required to continue providing work for men it would have to send them into the back-country. This could not be done without camping equipment. Fourteen applications were granted for m?n under the No. 4a Scheme. Under the No. 5 Scheme it was reported that the County Council would provide work for about 50 men next week.
