Lieut.-Colonel Thorns, D. 5.0., M.C., of the New Zealand Staff Corps, arrived to-day to take over the command of the Shanghai Volunteer Corps, vice Brigadier .Orpen Palmer, who has retired. The new Commandant controls the most extraordinary volunteer force in the world, consisting of British, Russian, American and Chinese companies. It is supported by the Municipal Council to the extent of £40,000 per annum. This is the first occasion on which the command has been given to a Colonial officer.
