REMARKABLE COMMAND

NEW ZEALAND OFFICER •SHANGHAI, March 10. Lieut.-Colonel Thoms, of tho New Zealand Staff Corps, arrived at Shanghai yesterday to take over command of the Shanghai volunteer corps, vice Brigadier Orpeu Palmer, who has retired. The new commandant controls the most extraordinary volunteer corps in the world, consisting of British, Russian, American, and Chinese companies. It is supported by the Municipal Council to the extent of £40,000 per annum. It is the first occasion on which the command has been given to a colonial officer.
