A DRY WINTER.

The unusual dryness of the present winter in the Ashburton County may be gauged by the fact that railway employees are engaged in clearing and burning large quantities of dry grass along the reserves adjoining the railway line. This is the first precautionary measure toward forming firebreaks. Usually it is not commenced until much later in the year, but the comparativelv dry nature oi the season has permitted the work to be put in hand.
