DROUGHT RELIEF

UNITED STATES' ACTION. PAYMENTS AUTHORISED. TASK OF TRANSFERRING STOCK. •United Press Association—Copyright.) AVASHINGTON, August 16. The Federal Government took, its first major step in carrying out its drought relief programme when Mr Hyde authorised the immediate apportionment of 121,875,000 dollars for highway improvement, enabling the States to provide employment for the farmers who have been left destitute. Under the law the States must appropriate an equal sum for the same purpose, i One of the greatest problems facing the Department of Agriculture is the. transport of 500,000 cattle and about 2,000,000 sheep from the blighted plains of Montana to feeding pens in the nearby States. Mr Hyde and Mr A. Legge (chairman of the Federal Farm Board) are spending the weekend at President Hoover's mountain camp to consider the problem. The Farm Board in the meantime is preparing to advance 5,000,000 to the National Live Stock Marketing Association, for the purpose of beginning the Montana transfer. The Weather Bureau predicted further showers in the drought areas. Heavy rains fell throughout Connecticut Valley to-day. However, millions of dollars"' damage has been done to various crops, particubMly tobacco.
