BASKETBALL.
FINALS OF COMPETITIONS. . The finals of the Ashburton senior basketball competition and the junior soven-a-side wece- played on Saturday under good conditions. In the junior seven-arside Kiwi had the narrowest of victories over Technical School A. Technical attacked strongly for the first few minutes, but the Kiwi guards were equal to all calls made upon them, and they opened a strong counter-attack, which was spoiled by wild passing. Technical came again, the ball running round the ring and out, as did two other shots. From a' scramble Miss M. Church secured and opened the score for Kiwi, and almost immediately shot another fine goal. From the tljrow-in Miss M. Forsyth secured and scored for Technical. When the whistle blew for half-time the ball was in play, and a beautiful shot by Miss M. Forsyth made the scores 2 all.
Over-eagerness spoiled the second spell, and much fumbling took place, and a third spell had to be played. The outstanding feature of this spell was the splendid defence work of Miss L. Miller and Miss J. Blackwood, to whose work Kiwi undoubtedly owe their win. Half-way through the spell Miss M. Church shot her third goal for Kiwi, and soon after Miss M. Forsyth did likewise for Technical, but as she had bounced the ball twice the penalty cost her the goal, and Kiwi stayed off further attacks till iy.e call of time. Miss M. Knox was referee. Final of Senior Championship. In the final of the senior competition a /hard-fought game resulted between Convent Old Girls and Technical Old Girls. Both teams were below strength. Convent were without Miss C. Hewson, and ''an. injured hand spoiled the play of Miss J. McMillanConvent took the throw, but Technical intercepted and attacked. Green saved, and a long period of up-and-down play resulted. Then Miss I. McMillan, at a second shot, opened Technical's score. Convent put in some fast play, but' lost position badly, and Miss M. Gourlny broke up their attack time and again. Convent throwers got little of the ball, but Mrss N. Smith made the most of her first chance and scored. Misses M. Wells and B. Hawkes opened up attack after attack, but Convent guards beat them off, and half-time saw the score one all.
In the second spell Miss V. Burgess did particularly good work and sorely tried the White defence, but Miss M. Gourlay's uncanny intuition Avas equal to every occasion, and a counter-attack gave Miss J. McMillan a chance. A successful shot by Miss M.. Hanrahan evened the scores. Each side scored again twice successively. Good defence by Greens held their opponents, and a goal to Miss M. Hanrahan put Convent in the lead. Strenuous play followed, in which Convent made full use of every opportunity, and good goaling gave them the, winning point just before the final whistle. Score: Convent Old Girls 6, Technical Old Girls 5. Mr R. J. Thompson was referee. The winning teams were: —
