THE ASHBURTON CLUB. REVIEW OF SEASON. The annual meeting of the Ashburton Bowling Club was held on Saturday evening, when the president (Mr L,. c. Dunn) presided. The report stated that while few new members had been enrolled, the membership had not decreased, audi it was hoped that club and inter-club matches would increase the interest anion;; members during the coming season. Club competitions last season were keenly contested, and resulted as follow:—Champion singles, J. C C. McLachlan 1, W. H. Higgins 2; champion doubles, YV. and A. Lane 1, 1. Compton and W. H. Acton 2 ; handicap doubles, J. McElhinney and H. U Percy 1, 11. Featherston and E. W. Easterbrook 2; two-bowl doubles, J. Watson and E. W. Easterbrook 1, E. J. O'Brien and E. McSherry 2; champoin rinks, W. H. Woods, T. Compton, W. Acton and W. H. Higgins 1. The colts' singles competition was not held owing to the limited entry, and in its stead" the committee decided' to award a trophy to the junior player showing the most promise, this being won by W. R. Featherston. Bullock Pennant matches were productive of keen and interesting play, and the club again won the competition. _ Inter-club matches were much in evidence, the club being engaged with Edgeware. Shirley, Linwood and Beckenham. lie last three matches were won. The County championships resulted as follow Singles, J. C. C. McLachlan; doubles, T. J. Dohertvi and H. P. Milsom; rinks, W. R- Lane, T. Compton, W. Acton and W. H. Higgins The club was represented in the Maddison Cup tournament, and the tournament, both being held at Christchurch. The Transport Committee of the Club were deserving of credit for the manner in which they controlled this section, and thanks were due to those owners who .placed their cars at the disposal of, the club. The playing greens were in good order, and it was surprising that the surface stood the strain so well. In this respect, the thanks of the club were due to Messrs McSherry (ground-keeper) and Milsom (supervisor). The report concluded by expressing thanks to all who liac] assisted the club during the year. The financial statement showed that the year was commenced with a debit balance of £37 lis lid, and ended with a debit of £33 19s Id. Receipts amounted to £236 14s 3d, the principal items being subscriptions £l2l 15s 6d, overdraft levy £23 10s. The chief items of expendtiure were maintenance £125 4s 3d, catering £22 14s 7d. The balance-sheet showed that assets exceeded liabilities by £262 10s 2d. Moving the adoption of the report, the president congratulated the secretary on the true and full record contained in his report. The matches played with the Christchurch clubs were pleasant, and the whole season was successful. Success in a sports club was not the establishment of a huge credit balance, but the foundation of good fellowship. Mr G. Meddins seconded the motioin which was carried.
The president said the only weak feature of the club was the membership, and this had an effect on the finances. He urged members to make an endeavour to increase the membership thus revitalising the interest in the play. Two new members were elected. The following officers were elected: — President, Mr E. W. Easterbrook ; vice-president, Mr W. H. Woods; secretary, Mr W. H. Higgins; treasurer, Mr L. C. Dunn; auditor, Mr F. Pritchard; committee, Messrs C. J. MeEmchen, J. McElhinnov, T. G. Hardy, W. R. Lane, W. Oakley, together with the nast president (Mr Dunn) and the champion bowler (Mr J. C. C McLachlan) ex officio; delegates to Ashburton sub-centre, president, vice and nast presidents; delegate to Christchurch Centre. Mr H. Firman; delegate to Ashburton Sports Association, Mr R. Buxton: selection committee, Messrs W. RLane, S. Madden. T. S. J. Doherty. The election of the transport, ties and social committee was left in the bands of the incoming committee. On the motion of Mr J. Watson, it was decided that the, Club's appvocjation of the services of the retiring officers be recorded in the minutes. A motion of sympathy was nassed with Mr T. S. J. Doherty in hist illness.
Mr Hardy said that each year an increase in membership had been urged, but the Club was no further
ahead. He suggested that something concrete should be decided upon, and moved that the subscription for colts be reduced.
The chairman said that Mr Hardy would require to give notice -of motion in this direction.
Mr Hardy gave notice of his intention to move along the lines he had suggested. Mr Meddins stated that in some of the larger clubs members were required to" pay an entrance fee in addition to their annual subscription. There was no seconder, and the motion lapsed. The president presented the trophy orders to members who were successful in competitions last season. Mr Dunn thanked the members for the support, loyalty and co-operation they had extended to him during his year of office and hoped the same would be shown his successor.
