THE UNEMPLOYED.
IMMEDIATE WORK WANTED. A WELLINGTON DEPUTATION. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. About 200 unemployed waited on the Prime Minister and the Minister of Lands yesterday requesting immediate employment. It was stated that nearly 1000 men were registered at Wellington, and the position was becoming rapidly worse. In reply, Mr Forbes undertook to provide work for 200 men in the next two weeks—loo in Wellington and 100 in the Nelson district.
Members of the deputation expressed keen disappointment and urged that the provisions of the Unemployment Bill be put into immediate effect. Mr Forbes said it would be very difficult to do that, as the Bill was breaking new ground and required a thorough investigation. AN INCREASE FOR THE WEEK. TOTAL OF 5441 ON REGISTER.
