HEAVY FINES
TWO OF £3OO EACH.
MEN CUILTY OF BOOKMAKING. BOTH PREVIOUS OFFENDERS. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Before Mr Woodward, S.M., to-day, Ralph Ellis Thompson, aged 50, and Thomas Phillips, aged 58, pleaded guilty to charges of bookmaking. The Magistrate said that Phillips had been convicted three months ago, when he was fined £250. Thompson also had two convictions, and had been fined £2OO previously. He fined each defendant £3OO, in default six months imprisonment. TWO WANGANUI PENALTIES. WANGANUI, This Day. Frank Sanko and Matthew Carrol, described by the police as moderate bookmakers, were fined £lO each, in default one month's imprisonment. ALLEGED GAMING-HOUSE. WELLINGTON, This Day. ■August Hjalmar Peterson, aged 3b. and Thomas Quin, aged 35, charged with having kept a common gaminghouse, were remanded till August li, on bail of £IOO.
