WILLIAM PODMORE EXECUTED. (United Press Association— Copyright., 1 LONDON, At>ril 22. William Podmore has been executed for the murder of Vivian Messiter at Southampton in October, 1928. An eye-witness states that Podmore was unemotional, and placidly wrote letters till a few minutes before death He refused breakfast, but at the last gratefully accepted, stimulants. REFUSAL OF A REPRIEVE. LABOUR CONFERENCE REGRET. LONDON, April 22. > The Independent Labour conference carried Mr J. Maxton s proposal regretting that the Home Secretary (Mr J. R. Clynes) had refused to exercise his constitutional power of reprieving iPodmore, in which case a large volume of public opinion urged such action. The resolution added that the Independent Labour Party had repeatedly declared in favour of the abolition o. capital punishment, and that this was an opportunity of avoiding useless barbarity. . . , . The text of the resolution was telegraphed to Mr Clynes.
