STRUCK BY LIGHTNING

STEAMER S MAST CARRIED AWAY (Per Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, January 20. While the s.s. Awnvua was berthed at Half Moon Bay, Stewart Island, today, the top of her foremast was struck by a bolt of lightning, the lamp ancl about three feet of the mast being carried away. The boat was enveloped in a smother of sparks, and there was a terrific explosion, the foremast being carried overboard. One steel wire was burnt through, and ether minor damage done. Fortunately no one sustained injuries, hut the passengers received considerable shock. The damage will amount to about £25.
