MELBOURNE SERVICE.
NEEDS OF SOUTH ISLAND. A DUNEDIN RESOLUTION. (Per Press Assoe:ation.) DUNEDIN, This Day. Tiie Chamber of Commerce carried the following resolution: —“While recognising the difficulty confronting the Government and Union Company in promptly providing a, steamer to replace the Manuka, the Chamber emphatically protests against the Government consenting to the Union Company delaying fulfilment of its contract for one year. A regular, frequent steamship service between South Island ports and Melbourne is absolutely essential for the development of the South Island tourist traffic and commerce, and this Chamber urges the Government to take the necessary steps to prevent any possibility of the Union Company being granted further extension beyoiM that already agreed to. The number of passengers travelling on the Manuka’s last trips and by the Malieno indicates that, given suitable opportunities, tourists will gladly use this route, and that the Government will be reimbursed by the greatly increased use of State departments — railways, postal and tourist. The southern portion of the Dominion has been too long neglected by shipping interests, ancl to a lesser extent by Governments, and pow demands more equal treatment and opportunity with northern ports.”
