SPEEDING UP SYSTEM. (Special to the “Guardian.”) HASTINGS, June 10. During a talk to Hastings rotarians hy Mr H. R. Hounsell, telegraph engineer on the progress of telephonic communication, it was mentioned that -the system of multiple dialling is now being tried out between Wellington and “Palmerston North, which promises to have the important effect of speeding up toll calls ‘ between the larger centres. The system was de- ' vised bv Mr R. L. Apperley, who joined the P. and T. Department as a lad at Hastings about fifteen years ago, and who is now one of the senior mechanicians in the Wellington automatic telephone exchange.
