PLEASING RECORD.

LOW INFANT MORTALITY. NEW ZEALAND STATISTICS. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Infant mortality statistics show that the total number of deaths under on© year has dropped from 1080 in 1927, to 984 last year, or nearly 9 per cent. The rate per 1000 live births fell from 38.74 in 1927 to 36.18 last year. This is considered a phenomenally low level never before reached. The nearer to the date of birth the greater is the mortality, and evidently there is always a proportion of infants who have little or no chance of living. Of the 984 death, 687 were due to “congenital malformations” and “diseases peculiar to early infancy,” and these are common to an3 r country. Examination of the figures show that far more infant males die early than females. Of the 984, 609 were males, and while the number was within one of the total in 1927, females dropped by 95. The difference, therefore, was more than ever accentuated. Last year the reduction in loss of life was principally in children over ante-natal origin and presumably not preventible, or only to a small extent.
