INTER-SCHOOL GAMES.

METHVEN v. GERALDINE.

RUGBY AND BASKETBALL. About 42 pupils from the Geraldine District High School paid a return visit to the Methven School yesterday. Messrs Jackson and Grieve and Misses Crawford and Brunton accompanied the visitors, who were received at St. John’s Sunday School Hall, where a luncheon, provided by the local scholars, awaited them. Mr A. S. Kennedy (headmaster of the Methven School) briefly welcomed the guests and hoped they would have an enjoyable I time. A debate was held, the subject being, “The invention of the steam engine has had greater effects) on the world than the discovery of America.” Misses Cracie Hewson and Dorothy Wilkes (Geraldine) took the affirmative and Misses Betty Davison and Ini Dickie (Methven) took the negative. The Rev. R. Morgan was judge, and after a most interesting debate gave his decision in favour of the negative side. Mr H. E. A. Lock) (chairman of the Methven District High School Committee) presided. Football and basketball matches were played. ' In the basketball matches, Geraldine A team 30, beat Methven nil. Goals were scored by G. Hewson, M. Symmington and M. McSliane. Geraldine B, six, beat Methven B, nil. Goals were scored by M. Kerr, I, Smith and J. Chisnall. The football match was a much more even game than the scores indicate, the visitors winning by 14 points to 3. For Geraldine, tries were scored by liayes, Ragg, Williams and Warner, Williams converting one try. Methven’s only score was the result of a brilliant piece of work by J. Fleming, who, from the Geraldine twentyfive, ran- right through to score a welldeserved try. McHugh made a gpod attempt to goal from the side-line, the ball landing on the top of the bar and falling back into the field- In the last five minutes of the game Methven were attacking strongly. At the close of the games the visiting teams were entertained at afternoon tea. Master Jack Callanan expressed the appreciation of the visitors for the excellent sport and hearty welcome extended to them. Maxtor •Stanley Chambers replied on behalf of Methven, and expressed the hope that they would enjoy a further visit in the near future.
