THE MUSICAL CLUB.
LECTURE-RECITAL ON SCHUBERT * t 43 r Those who were fortunate enough to be present at the meeting of the Ashburton Musical .Club on Saturday evening listened with the greatest interest to the lecture-recital on “Schubert and His Songs” by Mr W. H. Dixon, L.R.A.M., recently from England and now of Christchurch. Mrs A. T. Smith, in introducing Mr Dixon, welcomed him to the club and spoke in eulogistic terms of his visit to Ashburton. Mrs H. Naylor assisted tbe lecturer in illustrating some of Schubert’s songs, while the president (Miss G. Galbraith) rendered invaluable assistance by her accompaniments which, in Mr Dixon’s opinion, were artistically and skilfully played. Mr Dixon’s lecture was both entertaining and educational, and at the close of the evening all present had a keener appreciation of Schubert’s beautiful, immortal music, and a better knowledge of the tragic life of one who has been described as “The King of Song,” and who was the most prolific writer in musical history. The songs chosen from Schubert’s numerous compositions, sung by Mr Dixon, were: “Serenade,” “Who is Sylvia,” “A Roaming,” “The Young Nun,” “The Erl King” and “Winter’s Journey,” while Mrs Naylor rendered in her usual artistic and sympathetic style “Ave Maria,” “Death and the Maiden,” “Evening Boat Song,” “Wanderer’s Night Song,” “To Music’” and “The Litany.” The gathering was concluded by the proposal of a vote of thanks to Mr Dixon, by the Mayor (Mr R. Galbraith), while the hostesses (Mesdames Bundy, Birnie, Galbraith, Knox, Macdonald and Miss Lockwood) received thanks for their not unimportant part in a long-to-be-remembered evening.
