TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” June 10,1904.) Farewell Social. —A social tendered to Mr Clem Andrews, who is shortly to leave for London, was held in the Baring Square Church last evening. In addition bo a number of parlour games, songs were sung by the Rev. A. Peters, Misses Alcorn and R. Williams, and Messrs Rands and Wise. Immediately after suppre, addresses were given by Mr J. E. Purchase, representing the Sunday School; Mr E. llndrill, oil behalf of the choir; and Messrs F. Steel, C, Dixon and M. Priest. Motor and Horse Power. —An animated discussion is going on ip English agricultural journals on the subject of motors taking the>,\place of horses in general farm work, and, of course, both sides of the question are warmly defended. Mr John Scott, of Edinburgh, makes the first cost of plant for a 400-acre farm under horses as £763, and under motor power at £565. He figures out the cost per acre at 7s for horse cultivation, with four men, and by motor, with one man, 3s 4jd per acre. Eight horses were supposed to cultivate four acres per day, and one motor eight acres. The day wage of a man is put down at 5s each, and the cost of a binder at £35.
Hunting Advertisement. The Christchurch Hounds will meet at Chertsey at 10.15 a.m. on Tuesday, June 14, and hupt over P. Jones’ property, Selma. Alf. Bray, secretary. Football. —Senior: The Southern Cross seniors went to Methven by drag yesterday and defeated the home team by 8 points to 6,. (Playing at Rakaia, Old Boys went down to the home team by 8 points to nil. Mr B. Cassels was referee. Hakatere juniors defeated Southern Cross juniors by 11 points to nil. Harrison scored twice, Thomas converting one. Mr M. J. Lynskey acted as referee.
