Mr J. Carr (chairman of tire Ashburton County Council), who has been visiting the North Island with' the Canterbury farmers’ party, returned to Ashburton on Saturday.

Miss I. Munro (Matron .of the Malvern Maternity Home) was' this morning granted three months’ leave of absence to enable her to visit the Islands on a health-recruiting trip.

Mr A. H- Haden, who has been manager of the Bell Cycle and Motor Company, Ltd., in Ashburton for the last two and a half years, has been notified of his transfer on promotion to the head office at Christchurch. Mr Haden will leave Ashburto.n on Saturday.

A Dunedin telegram announces the death, at Kelantan (Malaya), of Mr William Bower Bell, aged 55, manager and part founder of tlie Dominion Rubber Company. At one time Mr Bell, who was born at Inchclutha, was a champion cyclist. He was also a pioneer motor cyclist.

Among the successful candidates at the recent examination held at the Bjelke Peterson School .of Physical Culture, Sydney, was Mies B. L. Buxton, daughter of Mr R... Buxton, of Ashburton, who passed with honours for the 0 grade teachers’ certificate. The test for this includes a thorough knowledge of anatomy and psychology, class handling in physical drill, deportment, folk dancing, etc. Miss Buxton also gained the highest honours badge of the B grade.
