LOOKING BACK.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From "Guardian," Dec. 10, 1903). Ancient Order of Foresters.—The Ancient Order of Foresters held its fortnightly meeting last evening, when the C.R. (Bro R. Kerr) was in the chair. Two new members were admitted and two proposed for membership. A euchre match was held between sides captained by C.P. (Bro, P. Kerr) and S-C.R. (Bio. Rudkin) and resulted in a win for the former side by 15 games to 14. Social items were then given as follows: —Songs, Bros. H. Barrett, E. Rudkin, Baker, senr., Alleyne, Brooking and Frost, and recitations by Brothers Moriarty and Mills. Ashburton Volunteers.—The officers of the Ashburton Volunteers met yesterday, there being present: Captain Dolman, V.D. (in the chair), Lieutenants Hayes, Hefford, Percy and Tucker. The strong expressions on the part of several correspondents in the local press regarding alleged misconduct of the Volunteers was strongly commented upon. Several officers referred in complimentary terms to the creditable manner in which discipline was maintained throughout the camp. It was decided that the hosljle comments were groundless and totally uncalled for. Baring Square Church.—An organ and song recital was given by the Baring Square Choir last evening. Items were given as follows: Organ solos, Miss Jones; solos, Mr G. H. Carson, and Miss Alcorn; flute solo, Mr G. Fowke; vocal quartette, Misses M. Jones and B. Alcorn and Messrs Undrill and G. Carson. The accompanists were Misses E. Jones, W. Orr and Mr L. Owen.
