CYCLING.

100 MILES “GORGE” RACE. WON BY B. W. ARNST. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Hay: Held over a. course from the corner of Shirley and Marshlands roads, thence through Kaiapoi, Rangiora and Loburn, via Glentui and Ashley Gorges and on to Oxford, then past the Waimakariri Gorge, through Waddington and Darfield, and finishing at the Addington Showgrounds—a distance of 100 miles—the biggest amateur cycling event ever held in the South Island took place on Saturday afternoon. It was promoted by the Papanui Amateur Sports Club. The weather was ideal, with a light north-west wind, which was considerably stronger between Oxford and the Waimakariri Gorge. From the Gorge to Barfield, with the wind at the riders’ backs, very fast time was made. The roads were in very good order. The placings wore:—

Farmer (lOmin), 4hr 56min 17sec. The ribbon and trophy for fastest time under 18yrs went to A. Mackie, who secured eighth place. The trophy for the youngest Papanui Club member to finish was won by L. Balch, and the trophy for the first North Island rider by M. Gane. . . It is understood that an inquiry will be held regarding the first few placings in the race. It is alleged that the riders were paced by a motor-cyclist for part of the way. Arnst, who is 19 years of age, took up cycle racing only this season. He is a son of Mr W. Arnst, wdio won the Timaru to,» Christchurch road-race in 1910. The winner is a nephew' of Mr Hick Arnst.

DUNLOP ROAD RAGE. MANY RIDERS FAIL TO FINISH. SYBNEY, September 29. The Bunlop amateur road-race from Goulburn to Sydney resulted: J. Rodgers 1, T. Taunton 2, F. Kerz 3. Time, 7hrs lOmin 1 3-ssee. The professional race resulted: Ken Ross 1, R. Lamb 2, J. Brooker 3. Time, 6hrs 39min 45sec. In the amateur event, 101 started 1 and 64 started in the professional. Bust and loose metal on the roads plaved havoc with the riders, the roadside at Mossvale being dotted with both professionals and amateurs mendino- punctures, and motor-cars proceeding to Sydney filled with competitors unable to continue the race. —Australian.
