MOTORISTS' MEETING.
THE ASHBURTON BRANCH. The Council of the .Ashburton branch of the Canterbury Automobile Association met last evening, the president (Mr N. Wood) presiding. A letter was received from.the Canterbury Automobile Association enclosing a list of traffic signs required for the district. In reply to the Association's request for the alteration of the Main Highway between Mayfield and Mount Somers, the Ashburton County Council wrote stating that it had considered the matter, but was unable to recommend the transfer. The letter was received.
Mr Wood said that one matter that needed attention was the number of speeding motorists that had been prominent in Ashburton lately. Something should be done to prevent this, as it was becoming too prevalent. It was pointed out that cutting corners was becoming far too prevalent.
Mr V. Russell was of the opinion that, as a rule, there was not much speeding in the Borough. There were isolated cases undoubtedly.
It was decided that the secretary write to the County and Borough Councils drawing attention to the practice of speeding and the cutting of corners by some motorists, and suggest that steps be taken to minimise these dangerous practices. The secretary reported that, 6ince the last meeting, 16 new members had been enrolled.
It was reported that the Ashburton Motor-Cycle Club were desirous of using the Association's rooms for the purpose of social rooms. It was decided to refer the matter to the Christchurch Automobile Association.
