LABOUR DAY GALA

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE.

THE QUEEN CARNIVAL. A meeting of the general committee of the Labour Day Gala was held in the Municipal Chambers last evening, Mr T. G. A. Harle (president of the Advance Ashburton Association) presiding over a fair attendance. The Hon W. Nosworthy (Post-master-General) wrote accepting the office of vice-president, and donating £2 2s to the funds. Messrs J. C. C. McLachlan and K. Johnston submitted the programme arranged by the Sports Committee, the total prize'money being £ll9, an increase of about £2 compared with last year, with one more race. " The committee .recommended that the Ashburton Scottish Society be asked to take over the Highland dancing and submit a programme with the same total of prize money as that given last year; that the Grounds Committee be asked to attend to the running track. Mr McLachlan said the programme allowed for an interval during the afternoon, as was done last year. The report was adopted. Mr S H. Truman said the cycling track was in good order, but required a top-dressing. There were several places in the running track that should be attended to. There were some hollows that should be filled up. It was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the Sports Committee to arrange with the Domain Board. Matters in connection with the Queen Carnival were discussed m committee, and it was later announced that it had been decided to approach the Ashburton A. and IP. Association with the idea of conducting a Queen Carnival in conjunction. Mr E. V. Conway reported that matters in connection with the sideshows were well under way. The president stated that the Procession Committee had made good progress with the details. Mr Conway said it might be possible to have a number of Maoris from Temuka at the Gala. Mr W. H- Amos said the expenses in this connection would come -to about £ls, and the effort would not bo worth while.
