ANNUAL MEETING.

EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE. THE MHDCANTERBURY BRANCH. The annual meeting of the MidCanterbury branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute was presided over by Mr C, G. M. Boyce, 8.A., and there was a good attendance. The report stated that the number of members on the roll was 75, this being about 80 per cent., of the number of teachers in the district. Since the beginning of the financial year the president (Mr K. G. Shrimpton) had been transferred to Sumner, the duties of president since devolving upon Mf J. Mclntyre. Other prominent members who had left for other districts were Messrs O. J. Roseyeare (Wulowby), John Campbell (Highbank), and P. H. Jones (Mount Somers). Very few meetings had been held during the year owing to the difficulty in obtaining lecturers and also to the fact that members are widely scattered over a large district. The report dealt exhaustively with several matters of vital interest to the teaching profession. ~ The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £36. . On the motion of Miss Hay (Tmwald), it was decided —“ That in the opinion of this branch, married women teachers should not be employed unless circumstances make it necessary. Mr W S. Pratt (Allenton) introduced the matter of daylight saving, and after some discussion, m which several teachers expressed the opinion tli at the measure had been detrimental to the educational progress of the children, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr A. S. Kennedy (Methven) —<< That this brandh of the N.Z.E.I. is not in favour of the Daylight Saving Act.” The election of officers resulted:— President, Mr John Mclntyre; vicepresidents, .Miss H. Lockwood and Mi W S Pratt; committee. Misses E. Knox, R. Hay and L. Fawcett, Messrs E. R. IDalley, C. G. M. Boyce, W. M. Garton, and McCurdy; auditoi, Mr John Cook: secretary and treasurer, Mr F A Silcock: delegate to conference of N.Z.E.1., Mr F. A. Silcock.
