GALLIPOLI CUP.

B SQUADRON’S SECOND WIN. A MUCH-PRIZED TROPHY. B Squadron, First New Zealand Mounted Rifles (C.Y.C.), has won the Gallipoli Cup for the second year in succession. Captain A. J. Nicoll receiving notification to this effect yesterday. The cup, which is awarded for inter-squadron competition, is decided on all-round proficiency, in drill, field work, discipline, general efficiency and mounted sports. The award was made at the conclusion of the annual camp held at Burnham recently. _ The Gallipoli Cup has a strange history, and although: of comparatively small intrinsic value, it ranks highly in the military trophies of the Dominion. During the campaign on Gallipoli the late Major Overton was ordered to proceed to Alexandria, and it was decided that the men should Kool as much money as possible to give lajor Overton for the purchase of extra provisions. A sum was collected, and Major Overton bought as many provisions as were obtainable in Alexandria at the time and returned to Gallipoli with a small balance of tho money, which, was to he returned to the men. Major P. M. Acton-Adams, who was in command of the C.Y.C. squadron, found that the money could not be returned to the donors, as some had either been killed or evacuated to hospital, and he therefore handed the money to Quartermaster-Sergeant E. W. Webb for distribution. This money had been retained by QuartermasterSergeant Webb until recently, when it was decided that it be spent on a trophy for squadron competition. The cup was bought with the money, and for that reason it is held to be of great sentimental value. The cup will be on view in the Bristol Company’s window next week. At the annual sports in connection with the camp, £he following Ashburton competitors were successful: Smartest trooper in the Regiment, Corporal L. Begg, Wakanui; bareback jumping competition, Lance-Corporal C. Begg, Wakanui; Lloyd-Lindsay com petition, Sergeant Butterick’s team 1, Corporal Gray’s team 2; wrestling on horseback, B'-Squadron 1. Members of the Methven troop won the Studholme Cup for the most efficient troop in B Squadron. Considering that the troop has been in existence only a few months, the win is all the more meritorious. It is understood (says the “Guardian’s” Methven correspondent) that a special function will shortly be held to afford an opportunity of presenting the troop with the cup.
