(From Our Own Correspondents). DORIE. The annual meeting of the Dorie Miniature llifle Club "was held in the .rdamine Hall. Air H. Harrison presided over a good attendance. Trie balance-sheet, which was adopted, .mowed a loss of £1 16s 2d for the sea ..on. The annual report showed 1 that the club had been successful in winning the Ashburton County Shield. They hag also won the majority of the matches with other clubs. The season will oper. next Saturday night, Officers were elected as follow:—Patron, Mr D. lones, M.P.; president, Mr W. C'arru thers; vice-presidents, Messrs H. Whiting, G. Rutler, W. L. Harrison, A. Richards, W. Larnbie, J. Baxter, H Vl.uckle, H. A. Harrison, F. Ironside. D. Harrison, D. Banks, N. Richards •and J. Muckle ; committee, Messrs F Alexander, <J. Barker, J. Beard, C. Durrey, B. Kingsbury, and D. G. McXio.
PENDARVES. The residence of Air J. Halkett recently had a narrow escape from fire Mr and Mrs J. Malcolm, of the adjoining farm, noticed a quantity of smoke arising, and when Mr Alalcoim hastened *to make investigations, ha tound the washhouse in full blaze. The family was absent and no assitance oould be got, so that Mr Alalcoim had a very difficult task. It was impossible to save the washhouse, but by very strenuous efforts he succeeded at last in preventing the flames from, spreading to the house. RAKAIA. The monthly meeting of the Rakaia branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held in St. Andrew’s schoolroom on Thursday afternoon. Airs Boag presided over a' fair attendance. The secretary was instructed to write letters of sympathy to Mesdames Blackley and Saunders in the death of their daughters, and to Airs Trevella in her illness. Mrs Boag gave an interesting address on “Tlifc Prophecies of the Bible,” as being fulfilled in the signs of the times. Mr& Boag was accorded a hearty vote o\ rnanivs. Airs Al. P. Cooke will addrea, cue next meeting. Afternoon tea was, served. The Rakaia River is running verj high at present and is very dirty. There is small prospect of the fishermen having any catches during its present state.
