CHARGE OF RECEIVING
SHIP’S FIREMEN GUILTY. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, January 26. Nine firemen from the Tairoa were charged jointly with having received a bale of dress material and a box of soap, of a total value of £SO, knowing the goods to have been dishonestly obtained, to-day pleaded guilty. A charge of breaking and entering a shed, and stealing goods valued at £l2/, was withdrawn. . When the died was opened it yas found that the goods were missing, and a search of the vessel s foiecastlc revealed the goods mentioned m the charge. It "was mentioned that the men constituted a complete watch on the vessel and the master was concerned as to his position if he were deprived of then services. , Remarking that the Act evidently contemplated some such position and, in the interests of the Dominion, it was not desirable that the men should remain imprisoned here, said the Magistrate.- He realised that it might not be an adequate punishment. He did not think it was, but lie proposed to formally Sentence the men-to a month’s imprisonment with liaid labour, they to he placed on boaid the vessel before she leaves Wellington. He thought that that was preferable to have the men landed here. The Tairoa goes to Napier and then Home.
