LOOKING BACK

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From “Guardian,” January 27, 1903). Phenomenal Weather. Ashburton yesterday was visited by a cyclone which approached the town at a terrific speed from the south. Mr Hay ■Smith, who was present at the Tinwald stock sale, said the roar of the storm was deafening as it speeded toward Ashburton. Damage to the extent of more than £2OO was the result of the storm. Air Robert Clark, coach painter, of Tancred Street, had a fortunate escape from serious injury when a large piece of timber drove through the roof and into the floor oi tlie small shed where be was working. Windows were broken in many houses m the town. After turning over a shed at the rear of Mr Hitching’s residence the' storm lifted the roof of Air Mih som’s lemonade factory and deposited it in the next section. Air J. Tuckei saw the roof of Mr Thomasl’s store, weighing fully two tons, carried away like paper and hurled on to the roadway. Air J. Tweedy, of Anama, who was caught in tho storm between liwell and Anama, while driving home, was severely bruised by the hailstorm, which he reports to have been as big as pigeons’ eggs. The mare which he was driving was so terrified that lie had to lead it down behind a hedge for shelter. , Ashburton Guards.—Colonel William Aloore, commanding the South Canter bu ry Battalion,, will inspect, the Ashburton Guards as soon as be is able to journey to Ashburton for the purpose.
