PETROL TAX
BENEFIT TO SMALL BOROUGHS. HIGHWAY DISTRICTS REVISED. (Per Press Association., WELLINGTON, January 28. Highway districts throughout the Dominion have their boundaiies altered according to a Gazette notice tonight the reason for the changes bein? to bring the districts into line with the scheme for distribution of petioltax receipts. . , „ . The statute provides for a definite proportion of the revenue to be received«bv boroughs over 6000 population, and it was made clear by the Government that the smaller local bodies who have to maintain roads which are essential links in the main highways would also receive consideration. Consequently, the new boundaries announced are designed to include m the adjacent highways district all boroughs with smaller population than 6UUU. The next step is that the Mam Highways Board will declare as main big 1ways the continuation of the highway through these borough areas. Under the former system, these boroughs have received assistance for maintenance only on the same basis as the board has subsidised maintenance on the adjoining length of county main highway, but in future they will be entitled to rbe same benefits as county councils m respect both of construction and maintenance.
