CANTERBURY COMPETITIONS

WILLOWBY SECOND FOR. SHIELD.

(Per Press Association., CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The results of the School Gardens Competitions were announced at the m*etmg of the Canterbury Education Board yesterday, as follows :—"',. McFarlane Shield-Belfast School 156 points, 1-,,-Willowby School, 145 points 2; Broomfield and Dunsandel Schools, 140 points (equal) 3. Sole charge school "section—Broom-. field, 140 points,. 1; South Malvern. 130 points, 2; Selwyn, 12 points, 3^ Ashburton County Council's Competition- Willowby, 145 points 1; Mayfield, 127 points,- 2; Methven, 120 P °it tS was' agreed that the usual prize money be awarded, and that congratulatory letters be sent to the successful schools, and also to those schools which were in the running in these competitions. It was also agreed that a letter be written to Mr James Young (Curator of the Christchurch Botanical Gardens) expressive of the Board's appreciation of his valuable services as judge- Associated with Mr Young were Messrs W. H. Winsor (a member of the Board), J. Moodia (cW Instructor), and M, McLeod (Chief Inspector), who examined the school; garden note books. , A communication was read from the Ashburton Borough Counicl stating that the Council would give £6 prize money for the best school gardens in the county during 1928 and agreeing to this money being allocated as five prizes instead of three as formerly. It was a<n-eed that a letter of thanks be written to the .Council in this conn€Bel°fast won the McFarlane Shield Competition in 1926, but in 1927 lost it by half a point to Rangiora,
