ALLEGED CARGO THEFT
CHARGE AGAINST WATERSIDER. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, January 16. Cargo pilfering was alleged against Edward James Eusenden, aged 34, a t waterside worker, who pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate’s Court to a. charge of stealing women’s apparel valued at £25, belonging to the Shaw, Savill. and Albion Company. Detective McHugh said that complaints were made to him on September 5 regarding extensive thefts and cargo pilfering in the Pakeha. On searching the vessel lie discovered a quantity of stolen goods in a lifeboat on the upper deck. On December 13 witness searched accused’s house. When interviewed, accused, who was told he would be charged with theft, said: “I am caught I am going to take my gruel. I intend to plead guilty to the charge.’/ Subsequently, accused made a statement to witness, in which he said he received the goods from his cousin, a fireman in the Pakeha. Accused was committed to the Supreme Court for trial, bail being allowed.
