MOTOR SPEED RECORD.
DEFENCE BY. BRITAIN. OAR LIKE GIANT PROJECTILE. LONDON, January 3. The American authorities have chivalrously agreed to permit Captain Malcolm Campbell, the British motorist, to compete in the triangular contest at Daytona, Florida, in February, the object of which is to break Major Segiave's speed record. He will make his attempt after the American, runs, and thus will have the advantage, of knowing the speed necessary to retain Britain's record. Captain Campbell's motor resembles a giant projectde, the driver being covered in, except his eyes and the top of his head. A fin is fitted at the rear of the machine to ensure directional stability. The engine develops POO h.p., and is a replica of that used in the aeroplane with which Lieutenant Webster won the Schneider Cup. It is still on the Air Ministry's secret list, and only the Air Force mechanic accompanying Captain Campbell will be permitted access to the interior.
