SWIMMING. EAST ASHBURTON CLUB. Good entries have been received for the East Ashburton Swimming Club's Carnival to-morrow evening, and_ the committee is, to be congratulated on the enthusiasm it has inspired in, swimmers. There is a total of 80, an average of eight competitors in each event. For the? main event on the programme—the 50 yards Curtis Cup Handicap—twelve are entered. Other figures are:—l2} yards learners, boys, 3; girls, 5 25 yards, bovs, 4; girls 7. 25 yards, ladies, "10. 25" yards, junior, 10. 50 yards inter-club, 12. 100 yards relay, 3 teams of 4 each. 25 yards breaststroke, 8. Inter-club dive, 10. RACE. IN SWAN RIVER. (A.P.A. and "Sun" Cables.) (Received This Day, 11.45 a,m.) PERTH, This Day. The annual swim through Perth, a distance of three miles, was won by E. Hille, who covered the distance in 1 hour 26 minutes 32 1-5 seconds. Hille s time was also the fastest for the race.

CROQUET. AUSTRALIA WINS THE SHIELD*. -(Received This Day. 10.45 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. In the croquet tournament, Australia won the shield presented by Mr Macßohertson. Three test matches were played between England ana Australia, England winning the first, and Australia the second, while the third was drawn. Australia won nine matches, 20 games, with 764 points; England won nine matches, 19 games, with 721 'points. The English team leaves Sydney on Friday for New Zealand.

Heavy ram throughout spoiled the game. Ihe Waratahs were frequently outspeeded by the lighter French forwards, but finished strongly, and outlasted the Frenchmen. Faultv footwork and bad handling lost the Waratahs* many opportunities.
