ASHBURTON RACES

TH£ SUMMER .MEETING. SIR ROY WINS TINWALD. OPHIR IN SECOND PLACE. The Ashburton County Racing Club's summer meeting was held on the Ashburton racecourse to-day. The weather was dull and threatened rain, and the attend nice was small, due no doubt to the state of the weather. A special train brought many enthusiasts from - Christchurch; but for the fact that ram fell heavily there this morning, nodoubt a much larger contingent would have come to Ashburton. The County was well represented. For the first race there were feAV people on the ground,, but the crowd increased as the afternoon advanced. Most of the acceptances were of a good class, and excellent racing waswitnessed, some of the finishes being very exciting. Overnight rain did not spoil a splendid ira<:k. Arrangements were well carried out by the officials, all of whom worked with a will to make the meeting a success. An attractive musical programme was presented by the Ashburton Silver Band, under the baton of Lieutenant H. J. T. Osborne. Results up to the time the "Guardian" went to press were: — HIGH WEIGHT HANDICAP, of 115 sovs; second horse 10 sovs, and third horse 5 sovs from the stake. On& mile. 1. Mr D. H. Rhondda led out from the start, closely followed by Oarnot. At the far jend Oriflamb came up close .to the leaders and the three fought out the finish. Wayward led from an excellent start, but Starlight soon drew level, while the rest of the field were pretty weii bunched together not far away. Coming round the bend Wayward was still out in front, and Court Jester and Jarrietiere were close up. Into the straight Court Jester put up a good &(rht to dislodge Wayward, but failing to do this hung on to. beat Saxette for second money. Wayward was two "en-ths ahead at the box, while ra a bunch of three, Court Jester beat Saxette by half a length, the fourth horse being Sacrifice. Time, 1.28. MELROSE TROT HANDICAP, of 110 sovs; second horse 10 sovs, and third horse 5 sovs from the stake. One mile and a-half. 1. Mr A. J. Wilson's hm Royal Serene, 4yrs, scr (O. E. Hooper) 1 4 Mr R. There were only two scratchings and from a fairly good start the. order past the stand the first time was Bingenwood, Prince" Audo, Glenrowen, and Tennis. This order was maintained till the back was reached when Bingenwood and Glenrowen stretched out a few lengths ahead, the latter eventually taking the lead. At the far bend, RovaT Serene showed up and, gaming on the leader,- was just behind when the straight was entered. She then went on and won from Glenrowen by halt a length, after a tussle which left a gap of ten vards between Glenrowen and Tennis, the third horse. Time, 3.29. TINWALD HANDICAP, of 175 sovs; second horse 20 sovs, and third horse 10 sovs from the stake. One mile and a-quarter. 1. Mr A. McAulay's b g Sir Roy, 4yrs, 8.10 (F. E. T 2. Mr H. Also started: 3 Margaret Birney. This was a great race, not more than three lengths separating the four starters at any time. From a splendid start Margaret Birney went to the front, followed by Sir' Roy and Moratorium close together. Ophir being last. They closed up as they neared the straight, and started for home practically in a line. Sir Roy came out in front, attended by Ophir. and former won by a length,'Moratorium being two lengths back third. Time, 2.6 l-ssec. LAGMHOR PLATE, of 100 sovs; second horse 10 sovs, and third horse 5 sovs from the stake. For horses thatbave never '.von an advertised race at time of starting. Five furlongs. 4. Mr A. S. Also started : 6 Akatore 8.4 8 Thurso 8.4, 10 Night Club 7.5 11 Red Jazz 7.5 (coupled with Pound Note , .5), 7 Synonym 7.5, 5 Island Fastness 7.0, d Star"R"id 7.5 Red Jazz led from a delayed start, and he'd that position till the straight was reached, then Te Awhina shot along and came home a winner by three lengths from Rigmarole, with Sea Gay two lengths back third.
