OBITUARY.
MR JOHN STEELE. There passed away at his residence, 25 Alford Forest Road, yesterday, Mr John Steele, who has> been 42 years a resident of Ashburton. Mr Steele, who was 86 years of age, had been ailing for more than three years, 18 months of which time he was confined to his bed. He was a native of Bradford, Yorkshire, England, where he. took a leading part in public affairs, bein" for some years secretary of the Bradford Liberal Association in the time of Gladstone. In 1883 Mr Steele and his family arrived in New Zealand and settled in Christchurch, whence, after two years' residence, they moved to Ashburton. In Ashburton, Mr Steele opened a store in the Alford Forest Road, where he conducted a thriving business until eight years <ago, when he retired. He did not take part in many of the public activities of the town, but was instrumental in the founding of the Allenton School. Mr Steele leaves a son (Mr John Steele, of Auckland) and three daughters, Mesdames W. Hyde and H. Garner (Ashburton) and A. Walker (Auckland).
