In conjunction with the Caledonian Society’s sports last Saturday, the committee of the Methven Fire Brigade and the brigadesmen conducted a number of side-shows with the object of raising- funds for the purchase of equipment. , Those in charge had _ a busy time, and with the tea-rooms, in charge of Mi's W. Morgan, upwards of dJ 101) was raised, a result which must f»e considered eminently satisfactory.. A gold medal, donated by the president of the Society (Mr J. R. Dalton) for the competitor gaining most points in the cash running and field events at the Society’s sports, was won by id. B. Woods, with two firsts, and a .second (13 points). L. R. Shields, with .two firsts and a third (II points) was runner-up. A gold medal donated by Mr T Forrest for most points in juvenile dancing, was won by Hazel McJ£ay (Timar’u) 240 points, Joan Sutherland being second with 234. A silver medal for the youngest dancer was awarded to lan Franks. A prize donated by Mr J. A. Stephen for most points in local dancing events was won by Josie Mclntosh. jYo Caledonian sports meeting in Methven would be complete without the . concert to wind up the day, and that held oil Satui-day night will long be remembered .as the best yet given by the Society. The Public Hall was full to overflowing, and the audience included many visitors from other parts. The items,- which were numerous and varied, were contributed mostly by Christchurch "performers, who were most generous in their response to the demand for encores. A Caledonian concert would be incomplete without * ' the pipers ahd dancers, and these were contributed by Mr Jack Cameron (New Zealand champion), who piayed oeotcisii national airs, and Miss Gladys Bushell, Miss Beryl Reid, and Methven’s team of juvenile dancers.' The remainder of the programme was as follows:-—Pianoforte solos, Mr Perrin;' humorous Scotch songs (in character), Miss G. McCaw; baritone solos, Mr B. Rennell; Hawaiian duo (ukelele and guitar), Misses Moody; ventriloquil item, Mr Scarf; fancy dance (Blazeway), Miss G. Bushell; songs," Miss B. Bryce; elocutionary item, Mr Wills; conjuring act, Mr Coates; songs, Miss Ferguson; fancy dance, Miss B. Reid; song, Miss E. Anderson; monologues, Mr Lowery.. The accompaniments were played by Mrs l 0. AckersOu, Mrs Ferguson ami the Rev. F. A. Tooley. During an interval, Mr T. S. Harrison, on behalf of the Society, presented a hand-somely-bound sports programme of their year of office to each of the past presidents. of the Society; Messrs K. Aitken and W. J. Cooksley returned thanks on behalf of the recipients. At the close of the, concert- a short dance was enjoyed. ■ '• Tile Rev. H. T. and Mrs York, Upper Riccarton, are visiting Methven and are the guerts of Mr and Mr W T . Morgan, “The Towers.” Mr York conducted the evening service at All Saints Church on Sunday. Mr York was at one time vicar of Methven. Mr and Mrs A. B. Adams and family are on a holiday visit to the Cold Lakes district. _ The monthly meeting of the Mount Hutt Road Board was,, held yesterday when tliere were present Messrs F. W. Ruddenklau (chairman), W. W. Goodwin, A. F. Marr, and D. Hampton.. An apology was received from Mr R. J. S Wilson. The clerk reported that the men and teams had been engaged in repairs of various roads and township streets. A considerable quantity of shingle was still required to repair the Lyndliurst Road. Tenders had been called for the concrete bridge at Cairnbrae, where a motor accident had ' occurred recently. The Board decided that in view of the large amount outstanding that all rates unpaid after February 6 be sued for without further notice, with 10 per cent added. A contract was let to Mr Gordon Huttoii, of Ashburton, for shingling a mile of railway line road near Lyndliurst. The engineer to the Ashburton County Council (Mr A. A. Fooks) forwarded plans _ . and specifications for a concrete culvert at Cairnbrae. The Board accepted the tender of Mr J. Thompson, of Ashburton, subject to the approval cf the County. Council. It was decided to adhere to Saturday as the half-holiday for the Mount Hutt district. The transfer of property from O. T. Jessep to Reece Smith was approved. The cocksfoot cutting rights of roads under the jurisdiction of the Board will be ( offered for sale on Thursday. The Board decided that the next meeting will be bold on February 7, in lieu of February 6. The Board then sat as the Methven Cemetery Board. ' It was reported that a considerable amount of work line! been done’ since last meeting in cleaning up the cemetery. Owners of plots are to be circularised in regard to further attention by the Board in- the proper upkeep of the plots.' The rates were fixed at 7s Gel and 12s 6d respectively for single and double plots' for one year. For all time £lo and £2O for single and double plots.
