THE UNEMPLOYED.

POSITION IN CHRISTCHURCH. {Par Press Association.. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. No fewer than forty-seven men registered at the Labour Bureau yesterday. Thirty-five-of them are married. Nineteen were sent to the City Council’s work, and ten to private work. The Deputy-Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.), stated yesterday that arrangements had been made for Mr B. J. Queree, unemployment officer for the Labour Department, to issue orders for food to unemployed who were in necessitous circumstances. Special arrangements had also been made with a number of cafes for supplying meals to men. The money collected as the result of a broadcast appeal was being earmarkd particularly for food, such as groceries and meat, and in special circumstances orders would also be issued for coal. In order to prevent any overlapping with the relief given by' the Hospital Board, communication would be established between the Labour Department and the Beard. The Department would obtain a list from the Board of the relief it had given out, and the list would (be checked, against the applications received by Mr Queree. The donations already received by the Town Clerk had amounted to £Bl Is, including £lO specially for food from an anonymous donor, and £4O 6s from St. Mary’s Roman (ktholie Ohurcn, Manchester Street, which was received at a special collection taken up yesterday. “Utterly absurd!” was the way in, which Mr Sullivan described a statement made at a meeting of the Canterbury Trades and Labour Council .on Saturday, that 170 men had been dismissed by the City Council and replaced by new arrivals from Britain. Mr Sullivan said that in accordance uith a . tatement he bad made to a deputation of unemployed on Friday, the work was being distributed over as many unemployed as possible. With that end in view, thirty men had been dismissed on Saturday, and something over fifty were taken on this morning. In addition, nineteen others had been engaged on Saturday.
