MAORI PROGRESS.
BENEFITS OF EDUCATION. WANGANUI, June 15. In connection with the matter of compensation for Maori rights on the Wanganui River a conference is to be held at Parakino, up the river, this week, to which representatives of tne Young Maori Party are invited. The underlying principles are not so much that the Maoris along the river desire compensation, but to cater tor the broader outlook of the Maoris generally along the West Coast and devote the 'money to educational purposes. Where bright young Maoris are discovered in primary schools the idea is to carry them through the universities with their education. . At the present time in this district there are scores of young Maoris who, if educated, would .be capable of holding bettor positions, but who are only swelling the ranks of ordinary labourers.
