A STERN CHASE.
STRUGGLE WITH MOTOR THIEF. AUCKLAND, June 15. \ stern chase and several fierce struggles were the main features of an excitinie incident which occurred in the Grafton district last evening, when two men were surprised in the act of mailing away with a motor - car, owned by Mr J. Paul. After grappling with one of the men three times, the owner of the car and two friends were finally able to secure him, although not before they had broken his nose and done considerable damage to his mouth. The other man escaped from his pursuers. One of the pair hid in some undergrowth, while the other continued into the shelter of the Domain. _ The pursuers were not long in coming on to the scene, and Mr Paul who had observed a man break into the under.rrowth, went after him and dragged him out iby the necktie However, his hold was not strong and the man broke away and continued to run. One of his pursuers caught up with him and closed, but was fended oft with a severe blow. The other of Mi Paul's friends grappled with the fugitive, and after a strenuous fight tne man was overpowered and escorted to Mr Paul's car, which was waiting in Stanley Street. ~,,•• It was found difficult to hold him in the car as it was only a two-seater and with a desperate bound, he jumped out and ran off again with a fine turn ol speed Another chase ensued, but with the aid of another car which had come on the scene, the man was run to earth and securely pinioned.
