MOUNTAIN ACCIDENT.

WOMAN'S LEG BROKEN. STRUCK BY A ROCK. (Per Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, December 30. High up on the slopes of Mount Egmcnt to-day a distressing accident occurred, Mrs Marks, of Hamilton, having both legs broken by a rock which became detached from the moun-tain-side and rolled down among a party consisting of Mr and Mrs Marks and Mr and Mrs Williams, all of Hamilton. The party, who had been staying at the North Egmont Hostel for several dayst, left the hostel without guides on a climb to the summit this morning. When within 1500 feet of the top Mrs Marks was some distance ahead of the party, one of whom saw a rock tumbling down the steep mountainside, and called out to Mrs Marks, but too late to avert the accident. The big stone crashed into the woman's legs, badly smashing one and cracking the bone of the other. A member of the party immediately left for the hostel, whence a party set out with a stretcher. Then commenced a tortuous descent over shifting scoria and a slippery track. The hostel was reached late tin's afternoon, and the injured woman at once conveyed to New Plymouth Hospital.
