TO-MORROW'S ATTRACTIONS SPORTS AND PICNICS. NEW YEAR'S EVE IN TOWN. In striking contrast to the conditions { at Christmas, Ashburton is doing its New Year shopping in ideal weather. The streets this morning and afternoon, although not so crowded as on the day before Christmas, were fnirly thick with pedestrians, and shopkeepers report good business in spito of the fact that many people are out of town for the holidays. It is expected that owing to the fine weather the crowds in town to-night will eclipse those of Christmas Eve. The police are taking steps to see that people on the footpaths are kept moving, and, as at Christmas, firewoiJU of any description will be barred from public places. Any unruly behaviour will also be dealt with by the police. The majority of the shops will at the usual hour to-night, and, with the exception of confectioners and fruiterers, will not re-open until Tuesday morning. The confectioners and fruiterers will not close till a late hour to-night, and as it is np*t a compulsory holiday for these shops to-morrow it is expected that some will be open. The holiday attractions are numerous. The Ashburton Bowling Club will hold a progressive tournament on its greens' to-morrow and on Monday, while the Croquet Club will held a club progressive tournament Lo morrow. A representative team from the Ashburton Cricket Association will go to Hororata on Monday to play n team representing the Malvern Association, and two rinks of bowlers representing the Ashburton Club will go to Temuka to-morrow to compete in the Temuka Club's tournament. The Rnkatere Sports Club will hold its annual meeting at Hakatere to-morrow. An interesting day's sport has been arranged, and picnickers are assured an enjoyable outing. Several members of the Ashburton Amateur Cycling and Athletic Club will be competing in the South Canterbury Caledonian Society's sports at Timaru to-morrow and on Monday, while a team of seven men from the Ashburton (Defence Rifle Club will visit Christchurch to-morrow to compete in the annual Canterbury nile championships. The team will consist of Messrs D. F. Keir, F. Clark, G. Cromie, H. Cromie, J. Yeandle, E. Truman, and R. Bramley. The Ashburton Post and Telegraph employees will hold their annual picnic at Temuka to-morrow.

Special express trains will be run on Monday, but to-morrow only the usual four expresses will run. Oh Monday expresses from Christchurch will oass through Ashburton at 10.21 a.m., 10.43 a.m., 2.6 p.m., and 2.23 p.m., while trains from the south will pass through Ashburton in the afternoon at 3.31, 4.20, 5.56, and 6.42. This evening a jazz band party from the First New Zealand Mounted Rifles Band will enliven proceedings in town with jazz music. The object is to raise funds for the band's bazaar to be held in February. A dance will be held in the Orange Hall this evening, music for which will be played by Mrs Mitchell's orchestra.
